Chard History Group (CHG) started in 1965, when about 30 people attended the first
meeting. It was decided that the Group's main objectives should be to promote research
into, and gain knowledge of, all aspects of the history of Chard and District. In this case,
district was defined as roughly the mid-point between Chard and its neighbouring local
history societies.
CHG works closely with the Chard Museum, with some members serving on both
committees. The Group has associate membership of the Somerset Archaeological and Natural History Society, which enables members to have access to their Member's Reference Library at Taunton, and also to take part in the SANHS and Associated Societies' events.
The Group is also an Associate of the Council for British Archaeology (SW) and the Somerset Industrial Archaeological Society.
